Making a Difference in peoples lives
Please join us for our next work trip to Kentucky. This is a great way to serve right here in the United States. It is a week-long trip with dorm-style sleeping and meals together. You will leave feeling more blessed than when you arrived. We have been serving the people of Floyd County, Kentucky, since 2020. As coal deposits there have diminished over the last 75 years and coal companies have pulled out, few other businesses have sprung up to replace the lost jobs. The unemployment rate there is over 50%. Many young people have never seen their parents or grandparents hold a job. These families’ only income is a little Social Security and welfare. We typically take groups of 15-25 volunteers to this area every year to spend a week rehabbing homes. We work closely with a strong local organization, St. Vincent Mission, in David, KY. They qualify the clients, select jobs for us that fit our strengths, and provide us with housing. We contribute all of the labor and most of the finances to make these deteriorating homes safe again for their occupants. We go back to the same location, year after year, building long-term relationships in the community. We visit the families we have served before, to see how they are doing and see how else we can help. We also donate to their thrift store and raise funds for their water purification systems drive.
